What makes Newhaven special? Is it the people, the beach, history, heritage, different cultures, nature, signage or the incredible community spirit?
Join graphic artist Maja Jones in our "Greetings from Newhaven!" workshop to explore and capture the essence of our town through collage. Drawing inspiration from retro travel posters and postcards, the vibrant murals of the Supergraphics Festival, and the rich history and heritage of Newhaven, you'll create postcards and posters that reflect the uniqueness of Newhaven.
We'll be using imagery, type, and texture to bring your designs to life. If you have any images of Newhaven that you'd like to include in your design, please bring them along. Open to all levels, this workshop includes all materials needed.

Cocktails and Collage at Port Hotel - Third evening ‘Come As You Are'

Maja Jones/Cocktails and Collage Evening at Port Hotel, Eastbourne

The third ‘Cocktails and Collage’ evening takes place on Wednesday 6th December at Port Hotel.
The theme set is ‘Come As You Are - Collage Portraits of Identity, Heritage, and Belonging’, inspired by Barbara Walker’s ‘Burden Of Proof’ Turner Nominated work at Towner Art Gallery in which she brings careful attention and visibility to individuals and families affected by the Windrush scandal.
This collage evening is an exploration of the essence that defines you - a journey into your personal history, heritage, and your current sense of self. It's an opportunity to claim your space and tell your story through the powerful medium of collage. Whether it’s a representation of a place, a community, or a shared history, your collage can be a canvas for expressing diverse aspects of belonging and identity.

Each one of the collage evenings at Port is designed to be inclusive, welcoming individuals of all abilities. A wide array of materials, patterns, type, magazines and paper will be available, ensuring that everyone can actively participate and express themselves.

For this session, feel free to bring any personal photos, whether original prints or photocopies, along with any ephemera that holds significance to you. These cherished items will add a personal touch to your collage, enriching the narrative of your identity, heritage, and sense of belonging.

Please note that tickets are non-refundable. Drinks are not included in the ticket price.

Cocktails and Collage at Port Hotel, Eastbourne - Second Session 'What If?'

Maja Jones Cocktails and Collage at Port Hotel, Eastbourne

‘What If? Creating A World Without Barricades, Borders Or Bureaucracy.’,

Inspired by Jesse Darling’s thought provoking Turner Prize-nominated work at Towner Art Gallery, in which he “skilfully expresses the messy reality of life, exposing the world’s underlying fragility.”

At this collage evening, you are invited to create a world without the constraints of the three Bs mentioned above. You can go as imaginative, surreal, and as fictional as you like. Or you can use this opportunity to collage a world that reflects your values, beliefs and the changes you aspire to see. What would that world look like? This is a perfect opportunity to be a dreamer while laying the foundation for the world you aspire to witness. It’s possible that the elements of this world already exist within your community. Could this be an occasion to celebrate and amplify the strengths of your community?

As usual the theme is loose and there as a guide and you are always welcome to do your own thing, experiment and explore. These sessions are open to all abilities and plenty of exciting materials are included.
